Apple assembled $22 billion worth of iPhones in India over the 12 months ending in March, according to a Bloomberg report. As per the report, there was an increase of nearly 60 per cent in production over the previous year, highlighting the US tech giant’s effort to diversify its operations away from China. Apple currently makes 20 per cent or 1 in 5 of its iPhones in India, reported Bloomberg citing people familiar with the matter.
Apple’s footprint has grown in India following the Covid shutdowns in China, which disrupted manufacturing operations at its largest plant. Apple suppliers such as Foxconn and Tata Group’s electronics manufacturing unit, which acquired Wistron and Pegatron’s Indian facilities, have increased local iPhone assembly. On April 8, Union Minister of Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw said that Apple exported iPhones worth over Rs 1.
5 trillion ($17.4 billion) from India in the fiscal year through March 2025. This acceleration in the shipment of iPhones from India is due to the announcement of reciprocal tariffs by US President Donald Trump in February.
Earlier, Bloomberg also reported that Apple would prioritise iPhones from India for the customers in the US. The Trump administration late Friday said that they would exclude electronics like smartphones and laptops from reciprocal tariffs, which is good news for companies like Apple, Samsung, and Nvidia. This also means that currently, iPhones made in India will not attract any duties.
