com (@MacRumors) November 18, 2024 Apple has begun notifying users of devices running iOS 8 or earlier that this functionality will cease in one month. A support document named "How to keep your devices and data backed up in iOS 8 or earlier," initially published on Monday and covered by 9to5Mac, provides guidance on this topic. Apple indicates that support for older iOS versions will be limited.
As of December 18, 2024, "device backups will require iOS 9 or later," according to the announcement. Apple explains that this change is intended to "align more closely with our published minimum software requirements." The functionality will remain unchanged until December 18.
However, backup data stored on Apple's servers will be deleted eventually unless devices are upgraded to iOS 9 or a later version. Following December 18, devices running on iOS 5 to iOS 8 will no longer be able to generate new backups, and any existing backups for these devices will also be rendered inaccessible. Nevertheless, the devices will continue to operate normally and will retain any data stored on them, as they will not be directly impacted.
Users have several options to consider. The primary option for those wishing to continue utilizing iCloud device backups for their older devices is to upgrade to iOS 9 or a later version. This update can be executed through the Settings menu, by navigating to General and then Software Update, on most Apple mobile devices.
