Anupam Kher, who celebrated his 69th birthday this year and marked 40 successful years in cinema, shared his insights on aging and the craft of acting in an interview with India Today Digital while promoting his upcoming Netflix film Vijay 69 . He emphasized that “actors have no retirement age,” highlighting the importance of remaining curious and engaged throughout life. He said, “People want to slot you in today’s time.
They want to fix you at 69 and tell you that you should now slow down, walk slowly, and do things in life slowly. I don’t want to do that. I will decide when I want to slow down and do things differently.
” Kher reflected on societal expectations of ageing saying, “I don't believe in clichés, even though I've achieved quite a bit in my life. I want to keep pushing, keep achieving more.” In Vijay 69 , Anupam Kher portrays the titular character, Vijay Mathews, a 69-year-old man determined to leave a lasting legacy and be remembered after his death.
Anupam said, “Akshay Roy, the writer-director, told me my character’s name was Vijay Mathews, and Vijay means victory.” He added, “There’s a parallel story to it about not living life as a cliché even after having achieved a lot. Vijay also wants to achieve more.
It's about pushing limits.” For Kher, acting is a journey of continuous reinvention. He explained, “I have learnt whatever I’ve learnt over the years, but every time I start a new film, I unlearn.
I don’t go into a new role as a veteran or as a legend. I go in as if I know nothing about acting.” He further added, “I start from scratch, and I become the person I am portraying.
That’s a great challenge because when you do so much work, there’s a chance you get rusty. The only way to shine again is to unlearn.” For Kher, age is merely a number when it comes to acting.
He stated, “Actors have no retirement age. If your body and mind are functioning, you can work until 90. That’s the advantage of being an actor.
I know my craft; I’m a trained actor, not a fluke. I learned my job before entering the film industry.” This year marked the 40th anniversary of Kher's debut film, Saaransh (1984), as he celebrates four decades of successful films.
Having observed significant shifts in Indian cinema, he urged filmmakers to balance meaningful narratives with larger-than-life entertainment to attract audiences back to theatres. Anupam Kher emphasized the importance of diverse storytelling in Indian cinema and said, “Make great films. Make films that are related to India and ones you truly believe in.
But also, larger-than-life cinema is important because it gives people the kind of entertainment they need. Some get entertained by tears, others by fear in horror films. All kinds of cinema have their place.
” His upcoming film, Vijay 69 , is set to start streaming on Netflix from November 8.
