Anubhav Sinha feels no filmmaker can understand the audience enough. "Only Raju Hirani knows the nerve of the audience!" he says with a laugh. The filmmaker, who recently released his IC 814 The Kandahar Hijack, spoke to Zoom on the sidelines of the Netflix series, about the audience expectations.
According to him, the viewers today is "very deceptive." "They want to see 12th Fail, Munjya, Stree..
. All different films. Audience taste is very diverse, but largely entertainment," Sinha said.

While on one hand, he stated that the biggest hits of 2024 were all small films, not backed by any "star power", he added that in the meantime, we also got "star-driven films" which were hits. "So they have always co-existed, and will always co-exist.
This discussion is fun for some people, that this has changed, but no, nothing has changed! Ardhasatya, Chakra, Mirch Masala all of these were hits 2-3 decades back. Indian audience has a very diverse palette," Sinha opined. Is Bollywood dying? We asked him his take on the "Bollywood is dying" debate seen in the recent times considering how big budget and highly anticipated movies were bombing at the box office.
Agreeing that Bollywood was going through "tough times", the hitmaker gave reasons. "Cost of production has become unreasonably high. It should come down.
Even the movie ticket prices have gone up. Going to the movies has become very expensive. Audience is not ready to take difficult chances.
If the tickets are cheaper, they will take a chance of watching it at Rs 200. But not if it is Rs 2000. They want to be sure before buying the ticket.
Problem is only of economics. If films and tickets become reasonably priced, then everything is fine. We need more tickets to be sold, but they aren't selling because the audience is not taking tough chances," he director-producer explained.
OTT releases need time So does the medium of release make any difference to a film's performance? He said, "Data tells us that films that work in cinema halls, also work on OTT largely. So even in terms of taking chances on an OTT platform, there's a chance of taking time that 'should I give 2 hours to this film or that film,' because the choices are too many." Sinha, known for helming gripping movies like Mulk, Article 15, Thappad and Bheed, is also known for his movies Tum Bin and Ra.
One from his earlier years as a film director. Infact, his directorial debut Tum Bin (2001) has over the years acquired a cult status and was even re-released recently. One deserved to be re-released too calling it "ahead of its time," Sinha holds a different opinion. "I thought of it then, I made it then. What I think of today, I'll make it today.
There's something called destiny and timing. Sometimes they fall in sync, sometimes they don't. We can say all this with the benefit of hindsight.
" Sinha hasn't announced his next project as yet, but he revealed to be working on his next slate of movies for the coming three years. Get Latest News Live on Times Now along with Breaking News and Top Headlines from Bollywood, Entertainment News and around the world..
