An Antiques Roadshow episode left viewers stunned after a rare family heirloom was valued at an astonishing amount . On a recent installment of the PBS show, a guest showed off a lovely pair of early 1900s bracelets. Designed to fit together, the bracelets could also be worn as a striking choker necklace .
The item was originally owned by the guest’s great-great-great aunt, and had a fascinating history. It was purchased by her father in the early 1970s for a staggering $20,000 and adorned with several diamonds, totaling an impressive 23 carats. Examining the piece closer, antique expert Katherine Van Dell revealed that the diamonds were sourced from the Cape region of South Africa. She explained, “It firmly dates to the mid-1920s, I would say about 1925. So this is a beautiful art deco platinum and diamond convertible necklace that converts into two bracelets.
“Jewelry from this period is a signifier of wealth, but it’s still really versatile. It has multiple purposes.” Back in the early 1900s, diamonds were found in South Africa's Cape region, which made diamond jewelry more popular.
Even though they became less rare, the sale of these pieces was still limited. The expert also said the jewelry was probably made in New York , since it was a big place for making jewelry back then. It was very, very in fashion,” Dell added. After taking a close look at the piece, the expert paused for a moment, clearly impressed. She gave it an incredibly high valuation, leaving the guest in complete disbelief.
“Conservatively, I would give it an auction estimate of $60,000 to $90,000,” Katherine said..
