The Athletic revealed in August that Newcastle were preparing to open discussions. Though a full agreement has not yet been reached, all parties are confident that the deal will be signed with the broad terms having been agreed upon.

The news comes after a complicated summer for Gordon, having been a member of the England squad at the European Championship but only playing a handful of minutes. Though they solved that problem by selling Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh to Nottingham Forest and Brighton & Hove Albion respectively, Gordon would have been open to the prospect of moving to the club he grew up supporting. Gordon’s new contract subsequently became a priority — for the club, there was a desire to both retain their key attacking talent and reaffirm their commitment to the player. Signing him to a long-term deal also ensures Gordon’s value if a sale does come in future windows.

If that means that he signs a new contract and is happy and settled, then I’m all for that.” After joining Newcastle from Everton in January 2023, Gordon won the Golden Ball at the Under-21 Euros later that year and has since made his senior England debut. He was named Newcastle’s player of the season in 2023-24 after registering 12 goals and 11 assists across all competitions.
