
Another big storm system is forecast to hit Wisconsin with thunderstorms and heavy snow on Wednesday. There will be a risk for strong to severe storms for southern Wisconsin Wednesday afternoon and early evening, particularly along and south of the Highway 18 corridor that runs from Prairie du Chien through Madison to Milwaukee, Andy Boxell, lead forecaster for the National Weather Service in Milwaukee, said in a statement. Strong winds and hail will be the greatest threat, but there may be a small tornado risk along the Illinois state line.
There will be a rapid transition from snow to rain from northwest to southeast Wednesday evening and night, with gusty winds producing widespread blowing and drifting snow, and significant reductions in visibility. Snowfall rates may exceed 1 inch per hour in some locations, with snow ending by daybreak on Thursday. There will be a narrow corridor of heavy snow running from Rochester, Minnesota, through Eau Claire and Rhinelander to Marquette, Michigan.
Madison should see 1 to 3 inches, Wisconsin Dells 2 to 6 inches, La Crosse 1 to 5 inches, Eau Claire 5 to 12 inches, Rhinelander 7 to 13 inches, Green Bay 2 to 6 inches, and Milwaukee, Racine and Kenosha less than 2 inches. Eau Claire is under a winter storm watch from 4 a.m.
to 10 p.m. Wednesday, and Rhinelander is under a winter storm watch from 1 a.
m. Wednesday to 1 a.m.
Thursday. Tuesday in Madison should be mostly cloudy, with a high near 60. After an overnight low around 41, with a 20% chance for rain after 2 a.
m., Wednesday should see a high of 56 and rain totals of a half to three-quarters of an inch, and winds gusting to 25 miles per hour. The rain should become all snow after 10- p.
m. Wednesday, with snow accumulation of around an inch possible as winds gust to 40 mph. More rain is possible Friday and Friday night, and rain and snow is likely Sunday and Sunday night.
Highs in Madison Thursday through Monday should be near 42, 55, 43, 46, and 42. Madison is expected to see less than 3 inches of snow.
