CHAGRIN FALLS, Ohio – The annual popcorn ball drop is coming up. The Popcorn Shop in Chagrin Falls will host its 13th annual New Year’s Eve popcorn ball drop in the village’s triangle park. Festivities will begin at 10:30 p.

m. Tuesday, Dec. 31, at Township Hall with hot chocolate, cookies, music from Jimmy Flynn, Hawaiian leis and glow sticks.

Organizers expect 2,000 attendees to watch the six-foot wide, 230-pound ball drop to mark the new year. And 400 popcorn balls will be launched into the crowd. The huge sphere - tabbed “Jupiter” - began as a 60-pound edible ball in 2012.

It once was stolen but returned. “This has become quite a unique annual spectacle and event for this unique village,” Popcorn Shop owner Dewey Forward said in a press release. “We now have dozens of volunteers, who call ourselves the Merry Pranksters, working together to launch this fun and wacky new year event.

” The shop is marking 75 years in business.
