Angie Gough: Response of Irish people to Ukrainian refugees has been incredible – now, we can do even more for them

In the three years since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, 114,000 displaced Ukrainians have sought safety in Ireland. Most had never heard of this country and certainly never imagined coming here – they faced total uncertainty about what lay ahead for them and their families.

In the three years since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, 114,000 displaced Ukrainians have sought safety in Ireland. Most had never heard of this country and certainly never imagined coming here – they faced total uncertainty about what lay ahead for them and their families. They were given a real Irish welcome as communities opened their homes and hearts, while the government mobilised to provide housing, education, medical and financial assistance on an unprecedented scale.
