ANC to ‘dissolve’ ANC and Gauteng PECs after electoral decline

The ANC suffered a significant electoral decline in KZN and Gauteng and says it will fight to win power again in the two provinces.

The African National Congress (ANC) has confirmed that it will reconfigure its provincial executive committees (PECs) in KZN and Gauteng following a major electoral decline. The decision comes after the party’s national executive committee (NEC) met at the weekend to deliberate on the about its poor electoral showing in the two provinces in 2024 amongst other issues. ANC TO MAKE LEADERSHIP CHANGES IN KZN AND GAUTENG Nationally, support for the ANC plummeted from 57% to just 40%, while in KwaZulu-Natal, the party dropped from 54% to just 16.

9%. Lastly, in Gauteng, the party also dropped from 51% to 34%. In KwaZulu-Natal, the Jacob Zuma-led uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party emerged as the biggest winner, earning 45% of the total votes and 37 seats in the provincial legislature.



The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) has the second-highest number of seats in the legislature, with 15, while the ANC has 14 seats. During a briefing on Monday, the party’s secretary-general Fikile Mbalula said the electoral losses the party suffered in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng required immediate action as the two provinces were not only the most populous are economic hubs of the country. Mbalula said there were extensive debates on the action that needs to be taken to strengthen the ANC in the two provinces and the NEC agreed that not taking an action was not an option.

“There were extensive discussions on the issue of the dissolution of the PECs or how best they can be strengthened. The NEC agreed that the overriding objective is how the ANC can be strengthened and rebuilt in the two provinces. “In strengthening the ANC, the NEC agreed that whatever action that would be taken should be based on key principles,” Mbalula said.
