Experiencing life in the south, the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua are on Kadavu for a four-day Super Rugby Pacific pre-season camp. The team arrived at the Namalata District School early yesterday morning where they will be billeted throughout their stay. They were accorded a traditional welcome ceremony and of course, their stay on Kadavu wouldn’t be complete without having fresh fish for breakfast.
“I think most of the boys haven’t seen a real traditional one, in terms of how the kava was mixed, it was special around the traditional nicks of it,” head coach Glen Jackson said. “We had some nice breakfast on arrival, some nicely cooked fresh fish and of course, the people from Kadavu have been amazing.” The boat ride itself was an eye-opening experience for some of the players.
“We have been blessed with beautiful weather. “I think the boat trip was an eye-opener for a lot of the boys. It was pretty lumpy at times, with a bit of squealing going on from some of the boys who hadn’t been on a boat journey.
“We were looked after beautifully in the amazing boat to get over here this morning (yesterday) with the sun rising, it’s been a great start to the trip so far.” This is the first time that the club has taken its pre-season training off the mainland, following in the footsteps of the Flying Fijians who travelled to Taveuni in preparation for the 2023 Rugby World Cup. The Drua returns to Suva on Friday.
