Described as her most prominent TV role to date, Seimetz will star as step-mother to the daughter of Elizabeth Moss' character from the original series.

Times may be bleak, but at least we’ll be getting to spend more time in the horrific, not-too-far-off-from-our-own-world Gilead of “The Handmaid’s Tale.” Not only will the show be returning in April for its sixth and final season, but a spin-off series based on author Margaret Atwood’s 2019 sequel, “ The Testaments ,” is also in the works at Hulu . While Ann Dowd has already been revealed to be reprising her role of Aunt Lydia, joined by new cast members Chase Infiniti, Rowen Blanchard, and Lucy Halliday, IndieWire can exclusively announce that actress/writer/director Amy Seimetz will also be appearing in the show as a series regular.

A source close to the project shared that Seimetz will be playing Paula, step-mother to Agnes, the daughter of June Osborne (Elizabeth Moss) and Luke Bankole (O-T Fagbenle), formerly known as Hannah. In the novel version of “The Testaments,” which is set 15 years after “The Handmaid’s Tale,” Agnes serves as one of three main characters, the others being Dowd’s Aunt Lydia, and a girl named Daisy who lives outside of Gilead. Seimetz’s Paula acts as an antagonistic force against Agnes, resentful of her presence and wishing for a child of her own.

For Seimetz, this serves as her most significant TV role to date, having previously been featured in recurring roles on “The Killing,” “Get Shorty,” and “Sweet Tooth.” In addition to acting, Seimetz is also a lauded writer/director whose sophomore feature “She Dies Tomorrow” was acquired and distributed by Neon in 2020. The psychological horror film stars Kate Lyn Sheil as a young woman whose fear of her own death begins spreading like a contagion throughout her new community.

Jane Adams, Kentucker Audley, Chris Messina, Tunde Adebimpe, and Josh Lucas are featured in the film as well. A Critics Pick, IndieWire’s review read, “‘She Dies Tomorrow’ ultimately becomes less of a linear survival story than a scattershot look at mental disarray. Seimetz collects the pieces into a mesmerizing audiovisual tapestry that includes a jittery score by Mondo Boys.

” “The Handmaid’s Tale” wraps up its sixth and final season later this spring, starting on April 8, with Season 5 having been released nearly three years in 2022. Moss, the star and executive producer of the series, directs the first two episodes, as well as the last two. In addition to “She Dies Tomorrow,” Seimeitz has also directed episodes of “The Girlfriend Experience,” “Atlanta,” “Outer Range,” and most recently, “Mr.

and Mrs. Smith.”.
