Tape Paul, known by his stage name AMUNA, is making waves in PNG’s music scene with the release of his latest EP, marking a significant milestone in his journey from a small village in Western Province to a rising musical talent. Born on February 16, 1994, in Kiunga, AMUNA is the eldest of three children and hails from Niogamban Village, Iowara, East Awin, North Fly District. Despite his family having no musical background, the village’s rich musical traditions sparked his passion.
Early influences included local Kapok guitar melodies and recordings by legendary village musicians like Theo Katingo and the late Timo Dumun. In the early 2000s, AMUNA began exploring music production independently, teaching himself to use FL Studio software. Overcoming initial challenges with off-tune demos, his dedication led to his first single, Wake Up Western, produced by Madang-based Wagu Dee of the Romix Crew.
AMUNA’s music blends reggae with local beats, a style that shines in his recently released six-track EP. Tracks like Apo Smash, Amgumtem Wanang featuring Mongox Tana, Meri Kumbe featuring South African singer G Zei, and Mr. Member featuring Y4Gunz showcase his versatility.
Collaborations with artists such as Gee Smooth and Rusha Bwoy have further solidified his reputation as an underground producer with unique compositions Speaking about his journey, AMUNA said: “Growing up in a small village, I never imagined releasing my own music. But through persistence and self-learning, I’ve turned my dreams into reality. This EP is a stepping stone for bigger projects.
” The EP follows several singles, including Noken Papua, Ne Muyu, Sumbiripa, and Pasin Western. With plans to release a full album in 2025, AMUNA is also preparing to establish a home recording studio to elevate his production capabilities. While he has yet to receive formal recognition or awards, AMUNA’s growing influence in the PNG music scene speaks volumes about his dedication.
Fans and music enthusiasts can look forward to more from this promising artist as he continues to leave his mark on the music landscape in PNG and beyond..
