Qatar tribune The Aligarh Muslim University Alumni Association Qatar (AMUAAQ) hosted the grand finale of the Sir Syed Memorial Cricket Tournament at the old Indian Ideal School ground, concluding with an electrifying match where the Integral University Alumni Association Qatar (Integral Knights) emerged victorious. The tightly contested series ended with Integral Knights defeating AMUAAQ 2-1 in a fitting tribute to the visionary founder of Aligarh Muslim University, Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, as part of his 207th birth anniversary celebrations. The tournament was one of several activities organised to commemorate Sir Syed Day 2024, scheduled for December.

Sir Syed Ahmad Khan’s contributions to education and social reform continue to inspire generations, and this cricket tournament served as a platform to celebrate his legacy while fostering camaraderie among alumni. AMUAAQ, a non-profit socio-cultural organisation under the aegis of the Embassy of India-Qatar and an associate organisation of the Indian Community Benevolent Forum (ICBF), plays a vital role in serving the educational, welfare, social, literary, and cultural needs of the Indian community in Qatar. The final match began with AMUAAQ winning the toss, and captain Mamnoon Ahmad Bangash elected to bat first.

Despite early setbacks, with two quick wickets and only 20 runs scored in the first four overs, AMUAAQ’s middle order, led by Anees Ahmad, Danish Nabi, and Habib, managed a respectable total of 116/7 in 16 overs. The Integral Knights bowlers, particularly Ahmad and Abdul, displayed precision and skill, backed by exceptional fielding. In response, Integral Knights had a steady start but faced challenges as AMUAAQ’s bowlers, including Mudassar, Danish, and Anees, tightened the grip.

The game reached a thrilling climax with 32 runs needed from the final four overs. Integral’s Rohit rose to the occasion, his powerful strokes, including a decisive six and square drive, sealing the victory in the 16th over with five wickets in hand. Integral’s Ahmad was awarded Man of the Match for his outstanding all-round performance, while Sher Afghan earned the Man of the Series title for his exceptional bowling throughout the tournament.

The lively match commentary by Sanjeev Kumar Sharma, alongside contributions from Vivek, Jawed Ahmad, and Ali Imran, added to the excitement of the event. Parallel to the cricket finale, activities for women and children were organised, with prizes distributed to winners. Saima Rafat and Ghazala Yasmeen from AMUAAQ’s executive committee led the family-oriented programs, ensuring an inclusive and enjoyable event for all.

Vice President Mohammad Faisal Naseem and General Secretary Khan Farman Khan ensured seamless hospitality with refreshments for guests. Distinguished alumni and community leaders graced the occasion, including Shahabuddin, Rashid, Imran Mumtaz, and many others. Guests from associated organisations such as ISC General Secretary Nihad Ali, Safeer Rahman of QIA and ICBF VP Deepak Shetty added prestige to the event.

AMUAAQ President Nadeem Zafar Jilani extended heartfelt congratulations to the Integral Knights for their spirited performance and commended both teams for their sportsmanship. AMUAAQ Chairman Jawed Ahmad reflected on the significance of the event and praised Farrukh Ali Farooqi, Head of AMUAAQ Sports, for his tireless efforts in organising the tournament with support from Faisal Naseem, Mohammad Farman Khan and Mohammad Nayeem. The Sir Syed Memorial Cricket Tournament not only celebrated the legacy of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan but also brought together the community in the spirit of sportsmanship and cultural pride, creating lasting memories for all participants and spectators.
