AMRITSAR: Jailed Punjab MP and hardline Sikh preacher Amritpal Singh 's associates are poised to launch a new party aimed at offering an alternative to Shiromani Akali Dal to the people of Punjab, reports Yudhvir Rana. The formal announcement will be made at Maghi Mela in Muktsar on Jan 14. "We have convened a conference at Sri Muktsar Sahib on Maghi Mela in which a committee will be formed.
It will be tasked with drafting the constitution of the new party, deciding its name, establishing an advisory committee, creating district-wise committees, and handling legal formalities," Tarsem Singh, father of Amritpal, said Thursday. SAD is also slated to hold a rally at Maghi Mela, to be addressed by senior functionaries including former deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal. Tarsem claimed the support of like-minded people, including Faridkot MP Sarabjit Singh Khalsa and Paramjit Kaur Khalra, rights activist and son of former PM Indira Gandhi's assassin Beant Singh.
