Ruben Amorim is expected to make plenty of changes to his Manchester United starting line up when they face Wolves in the Premier League today. United went the distance as they came from behind to defeat Lyon 5-4 in the Europa League on Thursday night, a match that pushed their squad to the limit. United acknowledge the Europa League is their priority for the remainder of the season, with the Premier League viewed as an obligation given they will record their lowest ever finish in the modern era of the competition.
United could yet salvage their campaign with Champions League qualification and won't take any unnecessary risks with their team selection before the semi-final tie against Athletic Club. It means several key players could be rested when Wolves travel to Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon, and Amorim has already hinted one key player could be rested for the match. Manchester United could give Diogo Dalot a rare rest when they face Wolves in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.
The Portuguese full-back played the entirety of their epic Europa League win over Lyon and has endured a busy campaign under Ruben Amorim. The 26-year-old has played in 50 of their 51 matches across all competitions, more than Bruno Fernandes and an appearance record only matched by Alejandro Garnacho. He only missed the league victory over Southampton in January due to suspension after he had been sent off in the FA Cup victory over Arsenal in the previous match.
Speaking after the victory over Lyon on Thursday night, Amorim admitted he would have to make changes to his side against Wolves, with Dalot one of those set to drop out. “I have to see it, players like [Diogo] Dalot, they are always ready but today he was really tired,” he said. “The guys that are at risk to have an injury, we will try to save them so we will see tomorrow [Friday].
” Noussair Mazraoui and Patrick Dorgu are both options to replace Dalot at right wing-back against Wolves, while teenage defender Bendito Mantato is another option to come into the matchday squad. Teenage striker Chido Obi is expected to feature from the bench, while the likes of Jaydan Kamason, Godwill Kukonki and Jack Moorhouse will all hope to make their senior debuts in the match.
