Qatar tribune Ashraf Siddiqui Doha The forthcoming state visit to the United Kingdom by the Amir His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad on the invitation of His Majesty King Charles III, marks a milestone in the bilateral relations between the two countries, the UK’s Ambassador to the State of Qatar, HE Neerav Patel, has said. This will be the first state visit by the Amir since his accession to the throne, the first such visit under the current UK government, and the first state visit of an Arab leader during King Charles’ reign. The British ambassador made these remarks at a gala reception hosted by him at Hotel St.
Regis Doha, celebrating the birthday of His Majesty King Charles III. The birthday reception was attended by Qatar’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs HE Sultan bin Sa’ad bin Sultan Al-Muraikhi; HE Ambassador Ibrahim Yousif Fakhro, Director of Protocol, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, members of the Diplomatic Corps, dignitaries, business leaders, members of the media, and guests. The envoy said the Amir’s forthcoming visit would open a new chapter in the shared history of the UK and Qatar.
“The leaders of the two countries will celebrate their achievements and outline their vision for future cooperation,” he said. HE Patel, who arrived in Doha earlier in 2024, said he and his family felt privileged to serve in Qatar and contribute to strengthening the robust ties between the two countries. He praised the deepening collaboration between the UK and Qatar across various sectors, noting, “We are partners in aviation, scientific research, and business.
The two countries are actively working together to foster economic growth through expanding trade and investment opportunities.” “The cooperation extends beyond government-to-government relations.” Reflecting on his time in Qatar, HE Patel shared that he and his family had developed a profound affection for the country, particularly appreciating the warmth, hospitality, and cultural vibrancy of Qatar.
He noted that since he arrived in Doha, his focus has been on partnering with Qatar on foreign policy, especially regarding regional crises. The ambassador underscored the importance of ending the suffering in Gaza and achieving regional stability, with a focus on ceasefire and the long-term goal of a two-state solution based on internationally recognised principles. HE Patel also commended the Government of Qatar for its unwavering commitment to peace and its efforts at addressing global political, humanitarian, and development challenges.
He affirmed that the UK would continue working closely with Qatar across these areas. Additionally, he praised Qatar’s leadership in chairing the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) this year, enhancing regional coordination for mutual prosperity and security. He expressed hope for progress on a UK-GCC Free Trade Agreement, which would bolster economic ties and support businesses and entrepreneurs across the region.
Recognising the efforts of his colleagues at the British Embassy, Patel singled out the embassy team for their dedication and achievements. He described them as “an exceptional group” that inspires him daily. The British ambassador also highlighted the strong educational ties between the UK and Qatar, with the UK being a leading destination for Qatari students.
He acknowledged the growing impact of British institutions, particularly in Qatar’s world-class educational landscape. He commended the British Council’s contributions to strengthening UK-Qatar cultural relations. In the coming weeks, the British Council will host a UK-Qatar Festival featuring various cultural events, underscoring the vibrant creative and cultural connection between the two countries.
