Amid Growing AI Rivalry With China, Satya Nadella-Led Google Drops Pledge To Not Use AI As Weapon: Report

Responsible AI? What?

Even as Chinese AI DeepSeek gains precedence over American rival OpenAI’s ChatGPT with Donald Trump in his second term at the White House, while the Russian aggression continues over Ukraine and Gaza remains bloodstained, the one company from Silicon Valley that pledged to not do evil has suddenly un-promised its sacred AI vows. Reportedly first spotted by Bloomberg, the Satya Nadella-led search engine giant secretly dropped its AI pledge from 2018 to not deploy artificial intelligence in surveillance and weapon tech. The section titled ‘Applications we will not pursue’ has been obliterated from the AI principles page.

In its new blog post, Google evokes the usage of AI in not only a) protecting people and b) promoting global growth, but also c) supporting national security. The newly updated AI principals page, meanwhile, states quite nonchalantly that Google will work to mitigate “unintended or harmful outcomes and avoid unfair bias.

A dedicated AI division of the company Google AI was first announced by CEO Sundar Pichai at the Google I/O 2017. The company has drawn flak for allegedly providing advanced software and AI tech for the US and Israeli military in recent times.
