
D.R. Horton calls itself “America’s Builder.
”Founded in 1978 by Donald R. Horton in Fort Worth, Texas, the company has grown to become the largest homebuilder in the United States, operating in 126 markets in 36 states.It most recently moved into Dalton, with a new 85-house subdivision now under construction at 167 Fox Hollow Drive, just off Cleveland Highway.
“We have about 12 under contract now,” said sales representative Crystal Searl. “Our smallest size is the Freeport, which runs about 1,497 square feet. Our largest is the Hanover, which is 2,804 square feet.
”The Freeport sells for about $280,000 and the Hanover for around $350,000.“All of our houses come with smart home technology,” Searl said. “That means you get keyless entry.
We also have eco lights, which you can control with an app on your phone. That’s really nice. If you are coming home at night with groceries or something, you don’t have to walk into a dark house.
You can turn the lights on with your phone.”It typically takes 90 to 100 days to complete construction after a contract is signed.“There’s always uncertainties when it comes to construction, so we never promise a date for sure,” she said.
Searl said the houses are “attracting a variety” of buyers.“We see families looking at the larger homes,” she said. “Down-sizers are looking at the smaller homes.
”Searl said D.R. Horton came into Dalton because it sees it as a growth market.
“I personally live in Dalton,” she said. “I’m from Texas. We chose Dalton because of the schools.
We also liked the small town feel. It’s close to Chattanooga and Atlanta for that matter. We’ve got the mountains around us and all of the recreation there.
”She said people from Atlanta and from Chattanooga who work in Dalton have been looking at the subdivision.“We’ve got people who don’t want to make that drive every day,” she said. “But we’ve also got people who work in (those cities) who are looking to move out.
If you have a family, a larger city isn’t always where you want to be. These people are looking to raise their children in a smaller town.”“But I would add that the majority of the buyers so far are people who already live in Dalton who want a bigger house,” she said.
Searl said D.R. Horton has been in the Chattanooga area market for about five years.
“We really started in Knoxville (Tennessee) and sort of expanded this way,” she said. “Chattanooga is now so big that it is its own division, separate from Knoxville. Atlanta has its own division.
