Please know that so many of us Americans truly love and respect your country and her citizens.

Wishing that this dark time will soon pass. Debbie Erenstone, Lake Placid, N.Y.

Please, rescue me from Trump Instead of Canada becoming the 51st U.S. state, the northern U.

S. states could join Canada. Get me out of this crazy country.

Joanne Zolomij, Evanston, Ill. In time, this blemish will go away A note to our Canadian friends: It is time to stay strong and not be bullied. Impose your tariffs, boycott American products, don’t travel to the U.

S. Maybe even stop the flow of energy to the U.S.

And most of all, don’t even think of becoming an American territory. Donald Trump may be causing some pain now, but like a pimple, in time it will go away. Canada, we still love you.

Damon Darley, Seattle, Wash. Thanks, Canada, for your past support Advertisement 3 Story continues below This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. Article content On behalf of a great number of the United States of America’s citizens, please accept my sincere apology for the sentiments and actions of our president, Donald J.

Trump. His narcissism, lies, self-centredness and bombastic rhetoric has diminished our image and made us the laughingstock of the world. We can only be thankful that there will not be a third term to suffer through, and pray that the mid-term elections will put the brakes on Trump’s ability to cause further damage to our great nation.

Thank you, Canada, for your past support as a reliable friend and partner in world affairs. Please remember that this, too, shall pass. Kenneth Campbell, Cypress, Tex.

We could not have a better neighbour As an American who has been to Canada multiple times — from Calgary to the Gaspé Peninsula to Ottawa to Cape Breton — know that Americans wish you well. We are stunned at the tariffs being hurled at you. We could not have a better neighbour than Canada.

We pray that the mutual respect, understanding, partnership and friendship between our two countries will always remain as strong as they were until a few weeks ago. We also pray that our democracy will survive. Advertisement 4 Story continues below This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below.

I also wish I had a dollar for every American I know who said they would like to move to Canada! Connie Rizoli, Westwood, Mass. Don’t let him keep bullying you I was honestly disappointed when your government backed off the 25 per cent retaliatory tarriff on electricity to the U.S.

after the great pumpkin threatened higher tariffs if you followed through. First, you’re letting him bully you; not the way to handle our narcissist-in-chief. Second, once he thinks he’s got you thumb-under, he’ll be back for more.

Best way to respond? Up the ante. If he raises tarriffs to 50 per cent, you’ll do so reciprocally: 50 per cent on electricity. Counter every stupid move he makes with one of equal or greater stupidity.

The Democrats here have not yet learned over the last year what you must now successfully learn over a few weeks: take off the gloves, punch back hard, don’t back down, double down. In other words, be more American. Terri Benincasa, Palm Harbor, Fla.

Please, Canada, just buy us outright Canadian friends tell me that your country is deeply disturbed about U.S. tariffs.

Also, you were insulted when Donald Trump suggested you should become the 51st state. Advertisement 5 Story continues below This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. Article content Let me suggest why you should consider this offer.

There is enough population in Canada — and votes — that Canadians could completely take over the U.S. political system.

Or, Canada could merely offer to just make the U.S. a new province in exchange for a stable economy.

Trump won last year with the smallest voter margin in over a half century. That’s the “mandate” he keeps raving about. Retirees like myself are losing our lifetime savings and investments at a frightening rate because of Trump’s economic delusions.

Sycophants whom Trump brought into the U.S. Congress are blatantly incapable of understanding the depth of economic problems they have created for U.

S. citizens, much less what to do to correct the disaster these mindless politicians have created. Please, Canada! Please join the U.

S. Or, just buy us outright. For what the U.

S. economy will be worth after only a couple more months of Trump’s incompetent rule, an average citizen on the streets of Ottawa could probably buy the place with only the loose coins in their pockets. David R.

Peironnet, Rocky Mount, Mo. Advertisement 6 Story continues below This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. Article content Patriotism is about decency and honour While I am proud of having been an American citizen for all of my 82 years, I am not proud of President Donald Trump.

What colossal gall for him to think he is entitled to an ounce of your soil just because he wants your mineral rights. We are not at war, you have made no hostile gestures towards America and you have always supported America. There has always been complete friendship, especially after 9/11.

This is another pathetic example of his puerile, boring braggadocio. You are so fortunate to be living under a sane, intelligent government system. I just ordered a bumper sticker that says “Canada is Not for Sale” and another with the Canadian and Ukrainian flag together.

Perhaps if Trump effects his cruel and insane plan to deport the Ukrainians here, they could come to Canada where they would be hardworking, contributing people. After the horrors they have experienced, they deserve peace and happiness. Besides doing the right thing, it would show Trump up for the animal he is.

Patriotism is not just about a country, it is about decency and honour. Advertisement 7 Story continues below This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. Article content Margaret Munson, Penn Valley, Calif.

We’re embarrassed by Trump’s antics I wish to state loudly that there are many millions of embarrassed Americans who are opposed to everything Donald Trump stands for and is doing. He is destroying our country. We have hope that a coalition of people, institutions and hard-working folks here will find a way to blunt his ambitions and keep all of us secure in who we are and what we stand for.

Please accept this apology. Jim Harrigan, San Francisco, Calif. A grain of hope for the future Dear Canadian friends — yes, I do have Canadian friends — please accept an apology from an American for the atrocious behavior of the current occupant of the White House.

There is a reason why the Canadian-U.S. border is the longest undefended border in the world.

It is because while we do have some different approaches to a variety of issues and problems, we are close in matters much more substantial than any situation or problem of the day. Current opinion polling in the U.S.

demonstrates clearly that even among substantial numbers of voters for the current president, there is strong opposition to his political behaviour. This gives me a grain of hope for the future. My wish is that after the current situation is in the rearview mirror, there will be restoration of the traditional warm relationship between Washington and Ottawa.
