Plaintiffs claim that the healthcare system should have maintained stronger cyber security measures in order to prevent the breach from happening in the first case.Columbus Regional Healthcare System is a North-Carolina-based hospital system that offers a range of medical services. The company has not admitting any wrongdoing through the settlement, but rather is opting to resolve the claims out of court.
Under the terms of the case, members of the class-action lawsuit can claim up to $5,000 in reimbursement for losses they experienced resulting from the breach.These losses could have occurred through fraud, professional fees, credit expenses or other means.People making a claim must submit a document proving they incurred the financial losses.
This could include receipts or banks statements, amongst other types of evidence. On top of the reimbursement, class members can also receive a pro-rata share of the settlement fund.According to the settlement website, it’s estimated this will be around $50, but the exact figure will vary depending on the number of claims filed.
