Trouble for America’s largest pharma exporter, India?

In his fiery speech at an event at the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC), Donald Trump signaled major tariff announcements for the pharma sector. The 47th president of the USA had previously shielded the semiconductor and pharma industries from his eccentric economic crusade against the world. US President Donald Trump said that his administration will announce a major tariff on pharmaceutical imports soon.

He added that the move is aimed at encouraging drug companies to shift their operations to the US. #DonaldTrump #Tariff #Pharma #TradeWar #cnbctv18digital pic.twitter.

co/qdI65ZRioW — ThePrintIndia (@ThePrintIndia) April 9, 2025 India is sometimes referred to as the ‘Pharmacy of the World’ due to its affordable pharma exports globally, which were showcased during the Covid vaccine crisis. The country leads the world in the export of vaccines for measles. BCG and DPT.

The World Health Organization (WHO) sources 65-70% of vaccines from the country. India also supplies some of the more affordable HIV drugs in the world. Outside of the US, the country has the highest number of United States Food and Drug Administration (USFDA)-compliant pharma firms with plants.

No wonder America is the largest importer of pharmaceutical goods from India. India provides 45 percent of generic and 15 percent of biosimilar drugs to the US. This means a revenue of 30-50 percent for Indian pharma giants like Dr.

Reddy's, Zydus Lifesciences, Sun Pharma, Aurobindo Pharma, and others. Per the Pharmaceuticals Export Promotion Council of India, in FY 24 alone, India exported $27.9 billion worth of pharma products, of which 31 percent accounts for the US, which is $8.

7 billion. Per the data compiled by the Trading Economics portal, in 2024 India exported $12.73 billion worth of medicaments to the US.

The pharma exports to the US in 2024 also include pharmaceutical goods worth $143.84 million; gauze, bandages, and similar articles worth $12.04 million; glands and other organ extracts worth $55.

77 million; and human or animal blood, antisera, and other blood fractions, vaccines, and Toxins worth $198.14 million. Besides the US, the UK and South Africa are the largest importers of pharmaceutical products from India.

The economic impact of these trades amid an increase in tariffs cannot be undermined, especially for elderly codependents in the US. Will this impact the Indian medical bazaar too? One user jibed, “ Not sure how all this will work.

Change is not the problem; it’s the abruptness of the change. Yikes !” Another remarked, “ Drug shortage incoming. Stay healthy.

” Yet another paranoid user commented, “ God help us all if the pill stops flowing. ” One user asked, “ At the same time, he needs to tell the country how they will get their meds in the interim. This will cause the biggest uproar yet from all the chicken littles if he doesn't .

” Another took a dig at Trump: “ Congrats. He's making healthcare even more expensive in the US. ” Not sure how all this will work.
