Americans can get $20,000 to relocate to ‘historic’ state – it’s only for five years but you must meet three criteria

A 'HISTORIC' state is offering Americans $20,000 to relocate to one of their towns. However, they simply ask for a five-year commitment if you meet three criteria. The town of Cumberland, Maryland , is offering $20,000 to Americans to relocate to their city.

According to Cumberland's website , the town will provide half of the large sum for relocating and the other half for any renovations or a down payment for a new home. "The package, offering up to $20,000, is comprised of $10,000 in relocation cash, PLUS up to $10,000, dollar-for-dollar match, for approved renovations on an existing home, OR for a down payment on a newly constructed home within City limits," it reads. While the offer sounds straightforward, the Choose Cumberland Relocation Program has a few requirements.

"It’s really to attract people who will benefit your community," she said, as per The Washington Post . "It’s not a social services program; it’s to bring people in who are employed.

" As per the eligibility requirements document , parties interested must have "full-time remote employment, existing local employment, proof of self-employment or accepting a new job in the area." A few other requirements include a casual interview with the city staff and not having a current home contract.

Additionally, applicants would be required to move to Cumberland within six months. While interested parties have to move in half a year, successful candidates would have to live in the town of Cumberland for five years. Should the selected party move before the five years, the $20,000 would need to be returned to Cumberland.
