Amazon's Prime Video viewers have revealed one of its shows is making them want to pack up their old lives and jet off abroad after binge-watching the entire first season. The platform's series, Expats, follows a group of women living in Hong Kong stars Nicole Kidman as Margaret Woo, an American who moved there with her family because of her husband Clarke's work. Set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Chinese region, the six-part series concentrates on the lives of Margaret, Hilary, and Mercy, who are brought together by chance and find their lives intertwined through tragic circumstances.
Mum-of-three Margaret is still reeling from the loss of her three-year-old son, Gus, while her friend Hilary, played by Sarayu Blue, is struggling to keep her broken marriage together. Meanwhile, 24-year-old Mercy, played by Ji-young Yoo, is struggling to deal with grief and guilt and becomes embroiled in a dangerous situation. The beautifully shot series, which came out in 2024, shows off some of Hong Kong's most stunning sights and has sparked a desire amongst many watching at home to catch a flight and try it for themselves.
One Google user penned: "This is by far an amazing series to watch time and again. It will seriously make you think about dropping what you’re doing, packing your bags, and flying over to HK just to immerse yourself in the wide range of contrasts (mountain vs beach, concrete jungle vs natural jungle, private car vs MTR/bus, glitzy condo vs towering shoebox flats)." Someone else gushed: "The best series in a long while.
Great script, perfect cinematography, and excellent performance of all actors. As expat myself, it was something that resonated with me really well. Action takes place in Hong Kong that is truly vibrant and fascinating place I would love to return to.
" Another person praised Nicole's acting chops, writing: "I am really enjoying this series. Anything with Nicole Kidman is going to be great because she's incredible at her craft. I wish people would resist the urge to be awful about her but these are the times we live in, any excuse to bring someone down it seems.
She is a fantastic actor and looks great no matter what age. If you can get past your personal prejudices you'll enjoy this fresh new story. The storyline is compelling with plenty of tension and interesting characters and a supporting cast.
" An excerpt from one lengthy review reads: "The film made me nostalgic for Hong Kong and the beautifully chaotic yet vibrant city that it is. The cinematography was a beautiful nod to Wong Kar Wai at times but with a contemporary backdrop. Hong Kong will always be one of the world’s most romantic yet arguably (at times disturbingly) complex cities and Expats does well to capture this dichotomy.
