Retail giant Amazon is closing its Newport depot. No jobs will be lost, however, as workers based in Amazon’s depot in the city will move to a new delivery station in Cardiff Bay. The business has been operating at Newport’s Celtic Business Park since November 2016, where it employs more than 100 people.
A spokesperson for the retail giant said: “We’re always evaluating our network to make sure it fits our business needs and to improve the experience for our employees and customers. “As part of that effort, we are relocating our Newport delivery station to a new site in Cardiff. “All employees will continue with their roles at the new delivery station, a bus service will continue, and there will be no changes to the service we provide to our customers in this area.
” A free bus service operating from Amazon’s Newport site will be in place for employees and will drop off at the new Cardiff site once opened in October. The Argus understands the Cardiff site will offer better facilities for staff, with a bigger canteen and locker rooms. Amazon has several sites in Wales, including a major warehouse, or 'fulfilment centre' in Swansea which is the size of 11 football pitches, and a warehouse in Deeside in north Wales.
The firm employs many more people from Newport, with hundreds based at its larger warehouse in Avonmouth, Bristol. The multinational firm takes pride it what it believes is a competitive package for employees. From day one, all employees are offered a benefits package including private medical insurance, life assurance, income protection, subsidized meals and an employee discount.
Amazon also offers employees an program that provides funding for skills development through nationally recognized courses of up to £8,000 over four years..
