Photo: Patrik Andersson When Lenny first arrived at Capanne, she was sulky and withdrawn. She paced the yard alone with her head bowed and her shoulders hunched.
This was not unusual for a transfer. Each prison is its own delicate ecosystem, so to be uprooted and replanted, without warning, was a jarring, even frightening experience. I sized her up— petite, slight belly, messy hair.
By the way she closed in on herself, I guessed that she’d only lash out if cornered. She wasn’t a threat to me. Lenny watched me jog around the yard every day and eventually worked up the nerve to say hello.

But I also didn’t object to her accompanying me as I walked around the perimeter, the cement walls so high I could only see the sky above us. She immediately informed me that she was a lesbian and asked if I had a problem with that.
“Of course not,” I said. I told her how I had helped found the gay-straight alliance at my Catholic high school. Lenny informed me that in Italy, people were still very closed-minded and judgmental.
I sympathised. When I was 14, I was ridiculed when a rumour went around that I was gay. That’s part of why I became an ally in the first place.
