During his swashbuckling debut Test innings at the MCG, Konstas was bumped by Virat Kohli. A week later, Konstas has found himself in the action again, this time going toe-to-toe with Bumrah in the final over of day one of the SCG Test. After India was rolled for 185, Australia’s opening pair of Konstas and Usman Khawaja had to survive a tricky 15 minute period out in the middle before the conclusion of the first day.
In an act of gamesmanship in order to reduce the amount of overs the Aussies had to face before stumps, Khawaja was slow getting ready to face up to Bumrah at the strikers end, which understandably frustrated the Indian quick. As Bumrah appealed for Khawaja to hurry up. Konstas at the nonstrikers end intervened, although it’s unclear what he said.
This incensed Bumrah, who then exchanged words with the young Aussie opener. “Konstas engages. Konstas is going at him.
I don’t really know if it’s much of his business the young man,” Adam Gilchrist said on Fox Cricket. “The umpire was very quick to get involved ..
. He’s riled them here Konstas. It’s tightened the tension here for the last couple of deliveries.
” After things calmed down, Bumrah bowled a dot ball with the following delivery and then nabbed the wicket of Khawaja with the final ball of the day. Just as Khawaja’s edge to third slip had been taken, Bumrah and several other of the Indian fielders turned straight to Konstas at the nonstrikers end, including Kohli. “They’re charging in from everywhere .
.. All sorts of drama here,” Gilchrist said.
“It was Bumrah who turned to Konstas. He learns a tough lesson in his second Test match.” “The celebration was somewhat unique.
Normally it’s hands in the air but they all turned and fixed their eyes on one man.” “This is terrific stuff. This will get the crowds in tomorrow,” former Indian coach Ravi Shastri added in commentary.
Cue the fireworks tomorrow, with Konstas set to face the first ball of day two. As expected, there was plenty of spicy commentary on social media site X following the incident..
