Alexander Isak had claimed he would be fit for Newcastle United's Premier League clash at home to Liverpool on Wednesday Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe has thrown into doubt the chances of Alexander Isak starting against Liverpool at St James' Park on Wednesday night. The Sweden international had come off in the 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace at the weekend. Newcastle's five-goal top scorer had said in an interview with beIN Sports yesterday that he would be "fine" to face the Premier League leaders Liverpool .
Isak said : "I am fine. It was really painful, a bad knock, but I've responded well." However, while Howe is confident the striker has not suffered a serious injury, he was this morning unable to confirm whether he will be fit to face the Reds.
The Magpies manager said: "He took a knock to his hip and wasn’t able to carry on (at Palace). We haven’t seen him in training yet, but I don’t think it’s a long-term injury. "We’ll wait and see.
It’ll be time, pain management and how the injury settles down." Newcastle have scored only 14 goals in 13 Premier League games so far this season but their biggest injury concerns come at the back with Sven Botman, Jamaal Lascelles and Emil Krafth all sidelined. But Howe confirmed another defender, Dan Burn, should be available against the Reds despite being bothered by an ankle injury that nearly ruled him out against Palace.
"Dan got through the game really well," said Howe. "When he got suspended, we used that as a chance to try to rest his ankle and get him 100 per cent fit. “He had a mixed time in that period where he didn’t play - he didn’t feel right, he went to see a specialist and he had really minimal training time, so I thought he was outstanding, all things considered, against Crystal Palace.
After the game, he felt okay.".
