Perth’s Alex Condon has played a key role in leading his team to US college basketball’s biggest prize, with Florida pulling off a remarkable comeback to beat Houston in the title game. Condon produced 12 points, seven rebounds, and a game-high four steals as Florida overcame a 12-point second-half deficit to win 65-63. The Hale School product came up with two big defensive plays in the game’s final 30 seconds, with his effort on a driving Emanuel Sharp helping cause a turnover before diving on a loose ball with moments remaining to seal the result.
Condon was just the fifth Australian to feature in the NCAA men’s championship game, joining Andrew Gaze (1989), Luke Schenscher (2004), Mangok Mathiang (2013) and Kody Stattmann (2019). The 20-year-old 211cm centre is also a ‘category B’ rookie at AFL club Collingwood, with his father Damien a former WAFL player at East Fremantle. More to come.
