In an era where even big-budget films can flop if they don’t resonate with audiences, Akshay continues to deliver consistent hits, arguably more so than his contemporaries like Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan, whose recent films have underperformed. Known for his stellar action scenes that earned him the ‘Khiladi’ tag, Akshay has had his fair share of ups and downs throughout his career.

As Akshay Kumar celebrates his 57th birthday, we take a look at 7 iconic roles that only the Khiladi could have mastered! 1. Raju was one iconic character that will be remembered even decades later where Akshay Kumar upped his game with a stellar comic act in Hera Pheri. The film came at a time when he was facing a lot of flak from the audiences for his disastrous string of flops, however, along with Suniel Shetty and Paresh Rawal, Hera Pheri resuscitated life back in him.

Khiladi is a role that Akshay Kumar aced with pitch perfect dialogues and more so with his huge acting maneuvers. It was a treat to watch Akshay beat the goons and it is the love and adulation that helped him have an entire Khiladi series of films named after him (to International Khiladi and now Khiladi 786), but the first one still stands out. And a film that made Akshay one of India’s best action heroes ever since! After trying out and out commercial entertainers, it was a welcome respite to see Akki settle for something so starkly different.

A con saga, Akshay’s Special 26 will definitely be one of his best roles ever. While Tees Maar Khan ended up being a disaster, Special 26’s strong content catapulted it into the Hit- list. Akshay Kumar is one actor who’s mastered all genres in the film industry.

And he just proved that in Bhool Bhulaiyya. In a horror film like this, Akshay is a comforting presence. Akshay puts the comic in this comic thriller, where he played a psychiatrist who helps Vidya Balan overcome “dissociative identity disorder”.

The last half hour of the film was the best part, if you know what I mean! Although he usually sticks to mainstream commercial films which at times work and at times don’t, he is one of those few actors who have taken a lot of risks in his career. And Viraat Bakshi from ‘Holiday-A soldier is never off duty’ brought back the actor in him, back after some crass entertainers. This film starring Sonakshi Sinha is one you don’t wanna miss.

An elite team of the Indian intelligence system perpetually strives to detect and eliminate terrorists and their plots. Akshay Kumar dons the role of Officer Ajay, who leads a team to destroy one such potentially lethal operation. This is one gripping film which does justice to the action aspect of Akshay’s capabilities.

Akshay Kumar tells the story of Ranjit Katiyal, an Indian businessman, who leads a happy and successful life in Kuwait with his family. However, when Iraq invades Kuwait, he decides to risk his life to save his stranded countrymen. The film was greatly revered by critics and is said to be one of Akshay’s best films to date.
