Passenger airline fares have soared by up to 95 per cent since Rex Airlines went into voluntary administration while the number of seats available has fallen across major routes, the competition watchdog has revealed. In a report into the domestic airline industry , the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission said that since Rex went into administration in July airfares on major routes had jumped. Airfares have soared since Regional Express went into administration.
Credit: Kate Geraghty It said that since Rex and Bonza withdrew from major markets, there was no longer any route in the country serviced by more than two major airline groups. Qantas and Virgin Australia have carried 98 per cent of all domestic passengers. One of the largest price increases was on the Adelaide to Melbourne route, up 95 per cent to $296 one-way.
Prices on the Melbourne to Gold Coast route have climbed 70 per cent to $432 one-way. “The increase coincides with less competition after Rex’s exit from many of these routes, an increase in seasonal demand during September and fuller flights,” it said.
