The Aiken Standard and The Post and Courier North Augusta/The Star took home a total of 28 during an annual banquet. Award winners were recognized during the annual South Carolina Press Association Awards which were held in Columbia and recognized the best in journalism across the state. The Aiken Standard won a total of 16 awards in the mid-sized daily and small daily newspaper divisions.
The paper won third place in General Excellence for digital. Reporter Bill Bengtson took home a first place award for spot news photography. Dede Biles took home second place for business beat reporting.
Aiken Standard and Post and Courier North Augusta/The Star Executive Editor John Boyette took home first place for column writing, second place for sports feature story and third place for short story. Reporter Matthew Christian won second place in the short story and spot news photo categories and third place in investigative reporting. Aiken Standard Sports Editor Kyle Dawson took home first place for sports action photo, spot sports story and headline writing.
He also won second place for spot sports story for the all daily division and third place in sports feature photo. Lauren Haley won second and third place for feature page division in all daily divisions. Former Aiken Standard intern Winn Hammond took home second place for news feature writing.
The Post and Courier North Augusta/The Star was awarded third place for general excellence in print for large daily and monthly division. The paper won a total of 11 awards. The Post and Courier North Augusta/The Star sports reporter Taylor Beltz took home a second place award for sports feature story and third place for sports feature photo.
Senior reporter Elizabeth Hustad won second place for growth and development beat reporting and third place (tied) for news feature writing. Community reporter Bianca Moorman took home first and second place for beat reporting and second place for breaking news for the Aiken Standard. She won second place awards for news feature writing (tied) and humorous photo.
