NEW DELHI: The All India Institute of Medical Sciences ( AIIMS ), New Delhi, is set to launch an innovative cadaveric course focused on ankle and foot surgery , starting from Saturday. This course is open to surgeons across India and marks a significant milestone in the growing prominence of the Ankle-Foot specialty within the field of orthopaedics in the country. The one-and-a-half-day programme for surgeons is expected to benefit patients suffering from conditions such as flat foot and bunion deformity (a bony bump that forms on the joint at the base of the big toe), which are currently handled by general orthopaedicians.

Specialised care in this area can lead to better outcomes for these patients. Dr Vijaykumar D, additional professor in the department, has been the driving force behind the design and conceptualisation of this programme, ensuring it meets international standards. "It's a kind of unique programme which has an international standard and very few courses have happened worldwide," he stated.

The cadaveric programme aims to equip surgeons with the skills necessary to address complex ankle and foot problems. The workshop will feature renowned surgeons from India and abroad, training 18 delegates using five cadavers. This diverse participation reflects the growing interest in the specialty and the need for comprehensive training programmes.

Doctors emphasised the programme's importance in preparing surgeons to tackle the intricacies of ankle and foot diseases. The initiative aims to strengthen local expertise and establish AIIMS as a leader in surgical education for neighbouring countries. The course will also provide surgeons with an understanding of newer instruments and implants, supported by the Division of Auxein Institute for Surgeons (DAIS).

Mr Gaurav Luthra, Vice President of DAIS, has played a vital role in providing the necessary support for this academic teaching endeavour..
