Responding to a 5th grade student’s question on the most powerful money lesson every child should inculcate, India’s Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman remarked that the very first thing children must know is “savings.” She quipped that children must keep aside some money for savings as well, rather than splurging and squandering away. Sitharaman further advised that “children must be taught to handle money responsibly.
” The FM was taking an informal session in Mangalore ahead of the Children’s Day celebration. The event was organized by the Citizens Council of Mangaluru. The first thing our children should know is that before spending money, they should keep some money aside for savings as well.

twitter.com/DWWnPubrXF — Nirmala Sitharaman Office (@nsitharamanoffc) November 13, 2024 Netizens took a jibe at the FM, asking whether the savings were “for future taxes.” “Kharche nahi karenge toh aapka GST collection kaise badhega,” remarked one.
(If we won't spend, how would your GST collection grow, madam?) “You yourself discourage savings by taxing it,” another user retorted. “Aap rakhne kahan dete ho? Tax ke baad kuch bache tab toh rakhe,” an irate user reacted to the Sitharaman remark on savings. Meanwhile, other netizens pointed out how household savings have dropped to a historic low.
Others reminded the FM of hefty GSTs on medicines, which boggles the middle class mind. One user wrote that they would never let their children become salaried owing to the taxation on every expenditure. But the gentleman forgot that the business class is equally frustrated by the tax tai’s regime.
But then is Sitharaman to blame for all the tax woes? Kids should also start saving for future taxes. pic.twitter.

No tax benefits, no social benefits, inflation sky high and biggest gift never before corruption levels leading to a dark future. So now people tend to live today instead of saving for tomorrow. — Nikhil Loya (@nikhilloya) November 14, 2024 Yes, teach them savings so you can rob onto their savings with your draconian taxes.
