A newly refurbished Chemistry Laboratory of the Accra Girls’ Senior High School has been handed over to the Ghana Education Service. The refurbished lab is expected to boost science learning in the school, offering students access to fully functional lab facilities for their practical lessons. The renovation was funded and completed by the 1984 and 1985 year groups of the Accra Girls Old Students Association (AGOSA).
The Deputy Minister of Education, Dr Clement Abas Apaak, praised the old students for their dedication and selfless contribution to their former school. He described their gesture as inspiring and a clear example of the positive impact old students can make.“It is not every day that former students remember their alma mater,” he said.
“But for this group to not only remember the school but also invest in such a key area like science education shows their deep commitment to national development,” he added.Dr Apaak further encouraged other old students of various schools to emulate the AGOSA 84/85 group.“We know the government cannot do it all, so we call on other old boys and girls to follow this shining example.
Together, we can build the kind of workforce needed to compete globally,” he underlined. The Head of the Science Department, Mr Victor Klevor, said “the lab was completely run down, the floor was not tiled, there was no water or gas flow, and the sinks were not working.”“We had to fetch water with buckets, and even used buckets as mobile sinks, we were also buying kitchen gas cylinders and distilled water just to run basic experiments,” he explainedHe expressed hope that with the new facilities, students would now have a better learning experience.
“Now that everything is working, the students can perform experiments properly, this will definitely reflect in their performance.”Madam Linda Adjoa Holdbrook-Amissah, President of the 84/85 Elite year group, said the idea to renovate the lab started when she noticed how bad the condition was.The place was in a very poor state, so I reached out to old students, friends and loved ones to raise funds.
I’m very happy we were able to make it happen, because this will help improve students’ understanding of science,” she stated. She thanked all who contributed in cash and kind to make the project possible and urged the students to take good care of the facility.
