Surat: Udhna police arrested a 32-year-old man who stole Rs 11.85 lakh from a sari unit, leaving behind an apology note titled ‘Sorry' and a promise to return the money. But this wasn't the usual burglar.
Along with the note of remorse, the man added a dramatic touch by folding his hands in front of a CCTV camera, asking for forgiveness. However, it turned out that the repentance was only aimed at misleading the police. He falsely claimed in the note that he was stealing to pay for his wife's medical treatment and would return the money someday.
After scanning footage from around 300 CCTV cameras, police arrested Lala alias Nelu alias Gurkha Bisoi (32) and his accomplice Girish alias Dhiraj Patil. Bisoi, a native of Odisha, is a history-sheeter accused of at least 12 thefts. The police also recovered Rs 10.
08 lakh from the accused. In charge of zone 2, Deputy Commissioner of Police Pinakin Parmar said: "The theft took place at Raghuveer Fashion in the BRC Lamxinarayani Industrial Estate in Udhna on the night of January 9. CCTV footage showed a burqa-clad man stealing the money after entering the unit through a bathroom grille.
Bisoi would target only sari units. He would go on Instagram to find the addresses of sari companies and then scope out targets. He would sleep on the footpath in the evening and break in at about 2am.
Inspector S N Desai added: "Bisoi worked in sari units before he took to theft in 2016. He knew units would have cash to pay worker salaries from the 5th to the 10th of the month. He would target units on such days to maximise his haul.
He wrote the note pretending to be a worker to mislead the investigation. Folding his hands in front of CCTV was a diversionary tactic. We traced him based on footage from 300 CCTV cameras and human intelligence.
" He knew there were 85 workers in the unit and hoped to get police to concentrate on them as suspects. He also kept making rounds after the theft, so that police would stop tracing his movements on CCTV footage. After the theft, Bisoi and his wife went to Mumbai and stayed there for a couple of days.
Thereafter, he sent his wife to Bhubaneswar by flight. From Mumbai, he returned to Surat for some work and was caught by police at a soda shop he frequented..
