Prayagraj: An event to mark World Kidney Day was celebrated in the nephrology department of Swaroop Rani Nehru (SRN) Hospital on Saturday. The experts who attended the event stressed the fact that kidney-related ailments increased rapidly in the last 8-10 years. Diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity are the main causes of kidney diseases and are the root cause of 80% of the cases.

All these are lifestyle-related diseases, which can be prevented by adopting the right lifestyle. However, there is a lack of awareness on this subject among the common people. To overcome this lack of awareness, World Kidney Day is celebrated every year on March 13.

This year's theme was ‘Are your kidneys healthy?' Media in charge, SRNH, Dr Santosh Singh, informed that out of India's population of 146 crore, 10 crore people suffer from diabetes and 40 crore suffer from high blood pressure. Half of the diabetes patients suffer from kidney disease. The initial symptoms of kidney damage are not detected, and by the time the symptoms appear, the kidney is damaged by around 80%, the experts opined.

Therefore, if someone has problems like sugar, high blood pressure, obesity, kidney stones, frequent urination, foam in urine, or getting up frequently at night to urinate, then they must get their kidneys checked, suggested the experts..
