Adam Devine talks about being hit by a cement truck in his youthAdam DeVine said a doctor recently told him he might be dying from complications related to a childhood accident. When Adam DeVine was 11 years old, a cement truck hit him after he misinterpreted a friend’s call to “Come on!” as a signal that it was safe to cross the street. “They say the reason I lived was the bike took the hit first.
.. I still slid 500 feet,” he said.
The truck picked him up under its front two wheels and “then spit [him] out,” leading to 25 surgeries.Speaking on an episode of In Depth With Graham Bensinger, DeVine said the last three years “have been a nightmare.” He began experiencing spasms and chronic pain, stating, “It hurts to sit for too long, it hurts to stand for too long, and it hurts to walk for too long.
”He shared, “They told me I was dying, literally, within this last year they told me that.” Doctors initially suspected stiff-person syndrome (SPS), a rare autoimmune condition marked by muscle stiffness and spasms. “The average life expectancy is six years for someone who has it, and they told me that I had that literally a month before my son Beau was born.
”DeVine later met with “the guy who coined the phrase stiff-person syndrome,” who told him that his symptoms most likely stemmed from his childhood accident rather than SPS. Doctors still cannot explain the cause of the spasms. DeVine believes his intense fitness routine during the pandemic triggered the issues.
“I just sort of snapped,” he said.DeVine said a stem cell treatment made him feel “the best I’ve been now for the past three years.” He stars on HBO’s The Righteous Gemstones and he will give his voice to the animated characters in Fixed and Hypergalactic.
