Action plan launched to cleanse Buddha Nullah

Ludhiana: City’s notorious Buddha Nullah , a key tributary of the Satluj river plagued by severe pollution, is now the focus of a high-level joint initiative between central and state authorities. A newly formed committee, led by the Jal Shakti ministry, convened its inaugural meeting on Wednesday at Circuit House here, marking a significant step toward tackling industrial discharge and waste management challenges in the region. Following the meeting, central and local officials inspected the city’s sewerage treatment infrastructure and a common effluent treatment plant (CETP) that is tasked with managing industrial waste.

Officials identified cow-dung disposal, industrial discharge, and effluent pumping station delays as among several pressing issues contributing to Buddha Nullah’s degradation. Collaborative efforts Officials emphasised the need for a holistic approach, recommending pollution control efforts extend beyond urban areas to upstream and downstream regions of Buddha Nullah. They also stressed the importance of integrating strategies for agricultural runoff and community waste management.



The joint committee comprises representatives from key organisations, including Dr Sabita Madhvi Singh (Jal Shakti ministry), Vishal Gandhi (Central Pollution Control Board), Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) member secretary G S Majithia, and M K Sharma from the National Institute of Hydrology, Roorkee. Next steps Manish Kumar, the committee’s chairman and director of the environment and climate change department, stated that the initial meeting had laid the groundwork for understanding the challenges. Future sessions will finalise actionable strategies and develop a comprehensive report to be submitted to the Jal Shakti ministry.
