Ludhiana: In response to alleged discrepancies in fuel expenses at the Regional Transport Office (RTO), disciplinary action has been initiated against bill clerk Ravinder Singh . The RTO has informed the district treasury office of this action. On November 5, the district treasury office issued a letter stating it had received a complaint regarding RTO employees tampering with records and submitting fraudulent fuel bills for approval.
The RTO was previously asked to respond to these allegations but failed to do so by the deadline. They have now been given until November 6 to provide an explanation along with a 2021 logbook and copies of fuel bills. The treasury office had sent multiple requests for clarification on October 4, October 18, and again later in October.
In response, the RTO acknowledged that disciplinary measures were being taken against Singh due to negligence related to a complaint filed by RTI activist Ajay Sharma. Sharma had requested the 2021 logbook for an official vehicle from the Accountant General of Punjab. He found discrepancies indicating that on September 14, 2021, a receipt was submitted for 20 liters of fuel for vehicle PB-11-BU-6827; however, no corresponding entry existed in the logbook.
Furthermore, none of the fuel receipts submitted for approval bore signatures from either drivers or transport department officers, yet they were still processed. Sharma has reported more inconsistencies, such as fuel being recorded for one vehicle while receipts pertained to another. He has urged the treasury office to review RTO records thoroughly to address these discrepancies and hold those involved accountable for any fraudulent activities.
