Australia’s consumer watchdog is taking both Coles and Woolworths to court for allegedly misleading customers about discounts on products. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has commenced separate proceedings in the Federal Court against the supermarket giants. It alleges the stores increased the prices of some of its products so that it could then place them under a Prices Dropped or Down Down promotion, making it appear as though customers were saving more.

“We allege that each of Woolworths and Coles breached the Australian Consumer Law by making misleading claims about discounts, when the discounts were, in fact, illusory,” ACCC Chair Gina Cass-Gottlieb said. Know the news with the 7NEWS app: Download today More to come ..
