It has been a solemn 36 hours in the city of New Orleans. A city that is known for it's usual vibrant, loud and welcoming atmosphere has been hushed over the last day and a half, following the devastating terrorist attack on Bourbon Street that left at least 15 people dead, and over 30 injured. Due to the inhume attack, the Sugar Bowl between Georgia and Notre Dame had been rescheduled from New Year's Day, to the 2nd.
Before the game kicked off, there was a moment of silence for the victims, which made for a somber scene. Both Notre Dame and Georgia fans looked to be emotional as they all took a moment of silence, that also included the tearful New Orleans Mayor Latoya Cantrell. Fans took to the internet to also share their feelings.
'Absolutely heartbreaking,' one fan posted on X. 'A powerful and respectful moment, honoring those affected by the tragedy while showing strength as a community,' another fan added. 'Great gesture, prayers to the victims,' one fan chimed in.
The sentiment, not only from those in New Orleans, but from everyone around the country, was the same. A heartbreaking tragedy. The investigation is still ongoing as new details continue to come out, but officials declared it safe to continue the rescheduled game as planned.
The FBI declared the attack an act of terrorism. “This was an act of terrorism. It was premeditated and an evil act,” said Christopher Raia, the deputy assistant director of the FBI’s counterterrorism division.
The city of New Orleans and families all over the country, will be in mourning, as they look to move past this heinous event..
