The stretch of Jalan Pine and Jalan Old Oya in Sibu which can be in complete darkness at night. SIBU (Jan 23): Road users here have shared their concern about the lack of street lights along the stretch of Jalan Pine and Jalan Old Oya where SK Ulu Sungai Merah is located. One of them, who only wished to be identified as Tom, told The Borneo Post that he had encountered several near-miss incidents when driving along the pitch-dark stretch of road.
“Even last night, I almost knocked into a pedestrian but luckily I managed to brake in time,” he said. “The roads have long been without street lights but it seems that nothing is done thus far to solve this issue despite complaints made to the relevant authorities,” he lamented. “I moved to this area in 2012 and there were no streetlights then.
Today in 2025, there are still no streetlights. “It’s a frustrating wait and no one knows when the streetlights along the stretch will be installed,” he said, adding that night driving, rain, and poor visibility would make it even worse to drive along the stretch of road. “As the roads are heavily utilised by the residents from Jalan Pine, Jalan Kemuyang, Mile 10 and several nearby villages, including heavy vehicles; it is hoped that the relevant authorities will act with urgency.
