Aaron Rodgers revealed his reaction to the Green Bay Packers drafting quarterback Jordan Love in the controversial move that changed his career . The veteran quarterback has gone down as a Packers legend with him winning Super Bowl XLV during his 18 years in Green Bay. Rodgers was drafted as the 24th overall pick in 2005 as he went on to replace Brett Favre, but in 2020, he was on the other end of a brutal decision.
Green Bay stunned the league and their own star signal caller in the 2020 NFL Draft when they selected Love in the first round. The move appeared to signal the start of a new era for the Packers despite Rodgers having led the Packers to a 13-3 record and an NFC Championship appearance the season before. Jets interview former Titans GM as huge Aaron Rodgers decision awaits Aaron Rodgers reveals truth about fallout with brother Jordan after The Bachelorette claim While Rodgers would’ve been hoping to see the Packers draft an immediate-impact player, he was left in shock as he watched the draft from home.
Rodgers spoke about the moment on his Netflix documentary: ‘Aaron Rodgers: Enigma’ where he described how he felt when Love was drafted. “I looked down at my phone and my agent just texted me: ‘Quarterback.’ And I was like, ‘No f—— way,’” Rodgers said.
“Then the pick happens, and I immediately got off the couch and was super non-reactive. I just went to pour myself some tequila and went back to the couch and knew there was going to be some interesting conversations. With time, it gives you perspective to look at things a little differently.
Take the ego out of it, be empathetic.” At the time, Rodgers had even joked on ‘The Pat McAfee Show’ that he would prefer the arrival of a skill-position on the night of the draft. “Yeah, we haven’t picked a skill position player in the first round in 15 years, so that would be kind of cool,” he said at the time.
But it didn’t go his way and it appeared that the writing was on the wall for Rodgers, with his days becoming numbered at the Packers. However, Green Bay head coach Matt LaFleur spoke highly of Rodgers’ reaction, revealing he became a mentor to Love. “He welcomed Jordan with open arms and he was a mentor to him.
I never asked him to do that. None of our coaches asked him to be that,” LaFleur previously praised. Rodgers took Love’s drafted as motivation for the following seasons as he put in successive MVP seasons in 2020 and 2021 to keep Love playing the backup role.
But the team were unable to find success, further calling into question the decision not to select a player ready to make an immediate impact alongside Rodgers. The Packers eventually decided to back their call as they traded Rodgers to the New York Jets in 2023, promoting Love as the starter. Rodgers’ two seasons with the Jets have been miserable, with him missing almost the entirety of last season through injury while the Jets fell well short of a playoff appearance this year.
Meanwhile, the Packers reached the Divisional Playoffs last year and currently hold a 10-4 record..
