A Title IX investigation is underway at Horse Creek Academy, an Aiken charter school attended by 1,425 students in pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. Title IX is a federal civil rights law passed in 1972 that prohibits sex-based discrimination and harassment in any education program that receives federal funding. The investigation “does not involve any students,” said school spokesperson Sarah Morris.
“Horse Creek Academy takes all matters related to Title IX seriously and works carefully to uphold the integrity of the process and protect the privacy of everyone involved,” Morris said. “As the investigation referenced in the March 26 special-called board meeting is ongoing, we are not able to share additional details or provide public comment at this time,” she said. “This is to ensure due process and safeguard the privacy of all individuals connected to the matter," Morris said.
An April 11 email to parents of the school’s students said “While the investigation is ongoing, we want to reassure you that we are following all required legal protocols.” “We want you to know that this situation is not expected to impact daily school operations or your child’s learning experience in the classroom,” the email stated. The school was founded as the Midland Valley Preparatory School in Graniteville in 2002.
In 2014 the name was changed to Horse Creek Academy and the school relocated to 1200 Toolebeck Road in Aiken. The school is authorized by the Limestone Charter Association..
