As the 2025 British Superbikes Championship looks set to get underway later this year, the Mercury takes a look at the story so far for Somerset-born rider TJ Toms. TJ, aged 24, was born in Puriton, began his motorcycle journey at the age of three when his parents gifted him a mini moto bike for Christmas. He said that – from the outset – he demonstrated a ‘natural aptitude’ for balance and control.

TJ honed his skills on mini bikes until he entered his first competitive race in 2010, when he won all three races. He said: “Since then, I have been determined to continue my journey in racing and push my abilities to the limit. “This journey is a huge puzzle with lots of pieces.

” In 2018, TJ entered the Stock 600 class of British Superbikes, on board a Kawasaki ZX6-R. He achieved multiple top-five finishes including a podium place at the final round of the season at Brands Hatch. TJ said the opening season gave him a chance to gain experience and compete against well-respected riders.

A year later, TJ joined G&S Racing Team riding the same bike he did a year earlier. He claimed top 5 and top 10 finishes throughout the season including a podium place at Thruxton and recorded a fastest lap. He also got another podium in Brands Hatch, finishing 6th in the championship.

TJ had a year off in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic but joined R&R Racing for the end of the season, clinching two podiums after competing in three races. In 2021, it was TJ’s first year in Stock 1000 class of British Superbikes. He qualified 8th in the final round at Brands Hatch, a track that seems to suite his abilities.

A year later, TJ joined Platform Hire Racing Team and raced on board a Kawasaki ZX10-R in the Stock 100 Championship. One of the highlights for TJ that season was finishing 16th after starting 37th after an incident in the previous race. In 2023, he moved up to the Supersport championship, racing for R&R Racing Team.

TJ got a pole position at Thruxton and finished second at Donington Park. He also achieved multiple top five finishes and ended the season eighth in the standings. Last season started in less than ideal circumstances as TJ lost his little finger during pre-season testing and multiple technical difficulties blighted TJ’s progress this season.

However, he did finish 6th overall, including third place at Donington. The opening round if this year’s British Superbikes Championship will be at Oulton Park in Cheshire in May..
