I’ve learned to drive in the rain. I have a passing awareness of the LSU football schedule.

I even learned to pronounce “Natchitoches.” The one thing I haven’t gotten over is the lack of fall weather. I think it’s pushed me further into embracing the autumnal aesthetic and seasonal offerings at restaurants.

Cheesecake Bistro’s seasonal rum-spiced apple cheesecake was no exception. The candied pecans add a little something extra to the texture. The combination of the sweet caramel and the tart apples was enough to make me forget that we had 80-degree weather in November.

Known mostly for their incredibly delectable espresso martinis, Zee Zee's Bar and Grill opened in 2022 in the spot where George's used to be under the overpass along Perkins Road in Baton Rouge.

The Dynamite burger features a double patty with aged cheddar, pickles, lettuce, maple bacon and a fried egg topped with a fluffy white bread bun. The meal came with fries (I opted for the crinkle-cut sweet potato fries). The burger was juicy and perfectly cooked, and the burger bun was so fluffy that it melted in my mouth with each bite.

I do have to warn potential diners that I could not finish the entire burger in one sitting, but it made for great leftovers the next day (fries included!). To answer one question that has been swirling around this neighborhood coffee spot ever since it opened in Lafayette over a year ago: no, there's no weed for sale at Coffeeweed Cottage.

Coffeeweed is a plant that is native to the southeastern United States, and can be used as a coffee substitute, although they serve piping hot cups of the real stuff at this charming boutique and coffeeshop in Lafayette's LaPlace neighborhood. In addition to the coffee, the shop also features inspirational displays of potted plants, holiday decor and lifestyle items. In other words, it's the perfect place to relax with a beverage and pastry — and that's exactly how I spent one Friday afternoon, with one of my favorite drinks.

A flat white is something of a middle child, sandwiched between a latte and cappuccino in the world of coffee beverages — and that's what makes it ideal. With a bit less milk than a latte, but without the thick foam of a cappuccino, it's easy to drink while still providing the jolt that coffee (and coffeeweed) lovers crave. And I probably don't need to sell you on ordering the tiny cupcake to go along with your coffee.

That's why coffee shops are so important. Because yes, you can make coffee at home — but does it come with perfectly moist, springy and delicious cupcakes that you didn't have to make yourself? For that, I recommend a visit to Lafayette's Coffeeweed Cottage. Coffeeweed Cottage, 410 Poydras St.
