The Chargers ran for 249 yards and made two second-quarter touchdowns by Alfred McKnight stand in a 14-6 District 6-3A victory over the top-ranked Cubs Thursday night at Memorial Stadium. Quarterback Tylan Johnson and McKnight, who finished with a game-high 135 yards, led the way for the 10th-ranked Chargers (6-3, 5-0).

“That was a hard-fought game. I knew it was going to come down to the special teams and who made big plays at the right time,” Madison Prep coach Landry Williams said. “I am proud of the way we stopped the run and controlled the passing game when we had to.

" U-High (7-2, 4-1) had a final shot to tie it. With 2:32 left, the Cubs moved from their 20 to the MPA 18. A 42-yard completion from Emile Picarella to Ethan Kimmie was one big play.

Picarella's 21-yard toss to Zay Martin was another. Joshua Hebert intercepted Picarella's fourth-down pass and the Chargers held on. It was Hebert’s first game in 2024 due to injury.

An injury another player put Hebert in the lineup. Madison Prep (6-3, 5-0) used a three-pronged rushing attack that consumed the clock in the second half. “Some mistakes that hurt us, and at the end they made a big play to seal the win,” University coach Andy Martin said.

“Our guys fought their butts off. I told them, ‘I’m proud of y’all.’ We had guys with no varsity reps come in and contribute.

” Jeremiah Anderson rushed for 73 yards and quarterback Tylan Johnson added another 50 on the ground for MPA. Johnson also passed for 50 yard, while playing with a contusion on his throwing hand. Two Johnson completions helped the Chargers eat consume five minutes of the second half.

“It was a game of grit,” MPA’s Johnson said. “It came down to whoever could make the plays and bring energy to their team. Some of the plays last night .

On fourth and-1, running back Alec Haynes was unable to retrieve a high shotgun snap. U-High didn't get inside the MPA 10 again. Madison Prep struggled to move the ball early.

U-High put together its only scoring drive midway through the opening quarter. On fourth and-1 at midfield, Haynes took a direct snap 42 yards to the MPA 3. Haynes scored on the next play giving the Cubs a 6-0 lead.

The Chargers scored on McKnight's 22-yard run early in the second quarter. MPA then drove 81 yards to score. Keyon Robinson's 25-yard reception from Johnson and a 37-yard run by McKnight MPA ahead.
