Chloë Sevigny ’s status as fashion’s coolest It-girl was officially cemented when scores of people queued around the block for her closet sale – dubbed “The Sale of the Century” – last year. In fact, the contents of her wardrobe can now be seen all over New York, as the actor recently told Jimmy Fallon. “I’ve seen so many kids in the street [wearing my clothes],” she shared.
“I saw Tommy Dorfman, and she had one of my old Chanel purses that I had bought at a thrift store years ago.” Meanwhile, Olivia Rodrigo also managed to get her hands on Sevigny’s vintage plaid dress by Versace – an item that she’d coveted for many years. Of course, one of the secrets to Sevigny’s style has always been her ability to mix thrift shop finds (many of which have no label) with high-end fashion.
She was wearing vintage on the red carpet long before it became a trend, from the sequined one-shoulder dress and tiger-print tights she wore to the premiere of Trees Lounge back in 1996 to the ’70s Holly Harp gown that she wore to the Vanity Fair Oscars party in 2002. Always ahead of the game, she wore Karl Lagerfeld’s violin dress from Chloé’s spring/summer 1984 collection back in 2013 – a decade before the design was recreated for Olivia Wilde for the 2023 Met Gala dedicated to Lagerfeld. Below, take a look back at Sevigny’s best vintage looks to date.
