News broke early Wednesday morning that the iconic actor Val Kilmer passed at age 65 . The Top Gun and Heat star died of pneumonia, according to his daughter, Mercedes Kilmer. He was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2014, eventually needing to get surgery on his trachea that impacted his ability to speak.

Kilmer's film career started with a role in 1984's Top Secret! , but his big break came in 1986 with his legendary portrayal of Tom "Iceman" Kazansky in Top Gun . Kilmer was known for his charisma on screen, portraying a variety of incredible roles over the course of his career. His last time on screen saw him reunited with Tom Cruise as the pair reprised their roles from Top Gun in the long-awaited sequel, Top Gun: Maverick.
